Quakers Fall Twice at Westminster

For Immediate Release:
March 2, 2008

FULTON, Mo. — Just hours after sweeping a late-night doubleheader, the Earlham College baseball team was back on the field Sunday for another twinbill.

Unfortunately for the Quakers, they were on the wrong side of the scores against Westminster College 9-5 and 10-2.

Earlham fell behind 2-0 in the opener before a three-run rally in the fourth inning put the Quakers on top 3-2.

Senior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) knocked in the first run with a single and then first-year Corey Murray (Richmond, IN/Richmond) blasted a two-run homer to give the Quakers a one-run advantage.

In the sixth inning, Earlham added to its lead on a Murray double, which was his third hit of the contest. The Quakers scored an unearned to make it 5-3.

The lead didn’t last as Westminster scored seven times in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.

Murray (0-1) got the loss for the Quakers after entering in the game in the fourth inning in relief of Sturgeon.

Westminster got off to a 6-0 lead after two innings in the second contest before junior Danny Bridge (Logansport, IN/Lewis Cass) doubled in the third and then scored on a single by junior Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport).

From that point, Westminster assumed command by building a 10-1 lead. A run-scoring double by Sturgeon accounted for Earlham’s final run of the day.

First-year starter Adam Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN/Snider), who was lifted in the second inning, suffered the loss to fall to 0-1 this season for the Quakers.

The Quakers (2-2) get back on the road Saturday with a doubleheader against Oberlin College. The non-conference contests start at 1 p.m. at Berea College. The Quakers face Berea in a doubleheader the following day.
